TFO: What do you find most rewarding about being a Project Manager?
K: One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Project Manager is the privilege of bringing a vision to life. Guiding a team, tackling challenges together, and watching a project evolve from an initial idea to its final form is truly fulfilling.
There’s nothing quite like the sense of achievement that comes from delivering a successful project and knowing you’ve made a real difference!
TFO: What are the biggest challenges you face as a Project Manager, and how do you overcome them?
K: As a Project Manager, I often face challenges like scope creep, resource allocation, and time management. Projects can easily grow beyond their original goals, so I prioritise clear communication with stakeholders and establish a solid change management process to handle new requests. Balancing team workloads and ensuring the right skills are available when needed can be tough, which is why I regularly review resource needs and maintain open communication with my team.
Deadlines can be tight, and unexpected issues frequently come up, so I rely on detailed planning to prioritise tasks effectively. By staying organised, communicating clearly, and being adaptable, I’m able to navigate these challenges and keep projects on track.
TFO: How do you prioritise tasks and manage your time effectively?
K: Effective time management and task prioritisation are crucial for successful project outcomes, and I’ve found a few strategies that really work for me. First, defining clear goals is essential—I start by breaking larger project objectives into smaller, actionable tasks, which helps me focus on what needs immediate attention.
Next, I create a detailed schedule using project management tools to set timelines, deadlines, and track dependencies. Having a visual timeline keeps everyone aligned and accountable. Finally, staying flexible is key—when unexpected issues arise, I reassess priorities and adjust the schedule without losing sight of the bigger picture.
TFO: What key skills do you think are essential for success in Project Management?
K: Communication is key, as being able to clearly convey goals, updates, and expectations to both stakeholders and team members is essential. Organisation plays a huge role too, helping me manage tasks, timelines, and resources efficiently so nothing slips through the cracks. Leadership is also important. Motivating and inspiring my team while encouraging collaboration keeps everyone on the same page. Of course, problem-solving is critical; being able to quickly identify challenges and develop solutions keeps projects on track.
TFO: What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to become a Project Manager?
K: I’ve found it’s important to gain experience by seeking opportunities to work on projects, even in supportive roles. This helps you understand project dynamics firsthand and develop practical skills. I’ve also prioritised building a professional network by connecting with other project managers and professionals in the industry, which has provided insights, mentorship, and even potential job opportunities.
TFO: What is the most interesting part about Project Management in a commercial setting?
K: What I find most interesting about Project Management is the nature of working with diverse teams and departments. The constant collaboration keeps things exciting, as every project brings together different perspectives and expertise. For me, it’s the impact that project management has in a commercial environment/ to a project that is so rewarding.
