The Pepper Seeds Thai Cafe, located on bustling Kent Street in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, was fit out by commercial fitout experts Total Fitouts Sydney South East. Formerly a smoked BBQ restaurant, the commercial hospitality fitout has been transformed into a vibrant Thai cafe, specialising in Thai-style breakfast and other traditional cuisines.
The commercial design, managed by BC Studio, merges old-style Thai aesthetics with modern touches. Benefiting from constant foot traffic due to the commercial fitout’s location, the outside reflects that with eye-catching signage.
The commercial fitout on Kent Street features a thoughtful blend of traditional Thai aesthetics and modern design elements, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Thai-inspired hand painted wall artwork, including intricate lettering and stylised botanical motifs, adorns the walls, adding authenticity and a sense of craftsmanship. The aged effect of the hand-painted signs, highlighted by soft spotlights, evokes the charm of a traditional Thai shopfront. Natural materials and textures, such as rattan screens and wooden cabinetry, are seamlessly integrated, while illuminated shelving behind the seating showcases decorative items and bottles, casting a warm, welcoming glow.
The seating areas in the commercial hospitality fitout with their comfortable bench backs and round tables, provide a relaxed and intimate dining experience. The unfinished skim-coated walls offer a rustic backdrop, complementing the earthy tones found in the tiles and wood finishes throughout the space. Rich terracotta tiles at the bar contrast with green subway tiles, reflecting both Thai tradition and modern design trends. The combination of these elements creates a grounded yet vibrant atmosphere, offering a contemporary dining space that remains true to its Thai roots.
Brett Jones, Director at Total Fitouts Sydney South East says, “A key feature of the project was reusing joinery from the previous BBQ restaurant, giving the cafe a sustainable edge while maintaining its connection to the location’s history.”
The commercial hospitality fitout scope included demoing a wall to open the dining area, separating the front and back of house with a partition wall, and installing a window with heat lamps for the kitchen. The commercial design also incorporated a sleek café-style front bar.
