The project involved a complete transformation of an existing retail tenancy, taking the space from a dark and dated Rip Curl surf store to a bright, welcoming and distinctly Australian retail environment.

The result is a commercial retail fitout designed around one of the biggest challenges of the project: how to showcase an extremely broad range of products, maximise retail capacity and create an inviting shopping experience without allowing the space to feel crowded or overwhelming.

Transforming a Former Surf Store into a Bright Retail Experience

Before Total Fitouts Cairns commenced work, the tenancy was occupied by a Rip Curl surf retail store. The existing fitout featured the darker timber-and-steel aesthetic commonly associated with the surf brand, with heavy feature walls, lower light levels, extensive apparel racking and a dedicated hardgoods display.

While the previous fitout was suited to its original operator, the space was not aligned with the needs of Australia The Gift or the broad product range it would be required to accommodate.

The brief called for a complete transformation.

Total Fitouts Cairns undertook a full defit of the existing Rip Curl fitout, taking the tenancy back to its base build before beginning the process of creating an entirely new retail environment. This included removing the existing shopfront signage, joinery, wall linings, flooring and lighting, providing a clean starting point for the new fitout.

From there, Kerrod and the Total Fitouts Cairns team delivered a comprehensive retail transformation, including a new shopfront and signage package, new floor finishes, feature wall and ceiling works, a complete lighting upgrade, custom and modular display joinery, a dedicated counter and POS station, back-of-house storage and stockroom facilities, as well as the associated electrical, data and compliance works.

The result is a space that is almost unrecognisable from its previous incarnation.

Creating a Bright and Unmistakably Australian Retail Space

One of the key priorities for the new Australia The Gift store was to create an environment that felt bright, open and welcoming.

The existing tenancy was comparatively dark and visually heavy, so the new design took the opposite approach. Rather than allowing the fitout to compete with the products on display, the space was designed around a light, neutral foundation that allows the extensive product range to take centre stage.

Pale walls and light-toned flooring help lift the overall feel of the tenancy, reflecting and distributing light throughout the store. This creates a sense of openness while also providing a neutral backdrop for the many colours, textures and materials found across the product range.

Natural timber elements introduce warmth through the display joinery and shelving, helping to prevent the neutral palette from feeling clinical. These warmer finishes are complemented by accent tones inspired by the Australian landscape, including ochre and red-earth tones, eucalypt greens, coastal blues and sandstone hues.
