Specialising in pizza and cocktails, Doughballs commercial hospitality fitout provides a moody, ambient dining experience that reflects its playful, energetic neighbours at Funlab.

The full scope of the project included a complete kitchen, bar, and seating areas, ensuring a functional yet stylish layout. Muse Design Studio and Total Fitouts Adelaide Central handled the entire process, from council approvals to design and construction.

The commercial design style is warm and inviting, with a focus on texture, coloured marble, and custom joinery to create a lively yet cozy atmosphere.

Amethyst Hudson, Commercial Designer at Muse Design said, “The use of curves throughout the space, particularly framing the kitchen and back bar, complements the circular strip lighting, adding a distinctive flair that sets the venue apart from other restaurants in the area. The coloured natural stone tiles on the bar create a beautiful focal point, balancing luxury with the budget constraints.”

The commercial interior design of the Dough Balls commercial hospitality fitout aimed to achieve a modern yet cozy atmosphere. Warm ambient lighting, particularly through pendant fixtures, enhances the inviting feel of the space. Wooden furniture in light, natural tones adds warmth and a handcrafted touch, which aligns with the artisanal concept of the restaurant. The open layout, with tables generously spaced, ensures a comfortable and accessible dining experience, while functional design choices like bench seating maximise the space without making it feel overcrowded.

The commercial fitout embraces a playful colour palette, dominated by a gorgeous deep blue, offset by soft beiges, browns and subtle pops of colour through artwork or accent pieces. The use of textured walls and soft furnishings, such as upholstered seating, adds depth and comfort, providing a tactile contrast to the harder surfaces like wood and tiling.

A key feature in the commercial hospitality fitout is the integration of brand identity through statement wall art and decorative accents, which reflect the dough ball theme and local culture. The eye-catching counter design ensures functionality, while pendant lighting over the tables creates intimate dining spaces. One of the challenges during the project was managing the budget of $400k while adhering to the centre manager’s control over the finishes. To maintain a high-end look within the budget, stone tiles were chosen over full stone slabs, and joinery solutions with tighter curves helped reduce costs for the ceilings and partitions. Additionally, opting for a grind and seal treatment on the floors instead of full coverings saved money for the client.

The final result is a beautifully crafted restaurant space that captures the essence of modern rustic design while offering a warm, inviting atmosphere for diners. The efficient use of natural materials, paired with a neutral colour palette and carefully selected design elements by Muse Design, creates a welcoming and comfortable environment, making Dough Balls a standout dining destination.
